Introduction to the Rule of Law campaign

The European Commission is launching a comprehensive campaign to highlight the significance of the rule of law among European citizens. This initiative is designed to raise awareness and foster a deeper understanding of the rule of law across all EU Member States. As one of the core foundations of the European Union, the rule of law upholds democratic values and ensures the protection of individual rights and freedoms. 

Campaign objectives

Target audience

The campaign's target audience consists of European citizens keenly interested in learning more about the EU efforts to protect and uphold the rule of law. 

There will be 2 campaign waves:

PHASE 1 (4 weeks starting from 19. September) in the following 12 countries: ​
​Estonia, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Sweden

PHASE 2 (4 weeks starting from 28. October) in the following 15 countries: ​
​Austria, Czechia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Cyprus, Greece, France, Belgium, Denmark, Latvia, Croatia, Bulgaria

Key messages of the campaign

Given the importance and sensitivity of this topic, the campaign aims to underscore the critical role that the rule of law plays in reinforcing the democratic fabric of Europe. By focusing on the six key principles that define the rule of law:
